A little bit about Psyche Mental Health Centre...
Where did it all start?
In 2020, amidst the start of a global pandemic, our Director, Allison Wells, purchased a psychology practice. Having worked as a sole trader on the Eastern Shore for a number of years, and having worked in various government positions prior to that, Allison had a desire to deliver effective mental health services differently to what she had experienced, knowing that there was always a way to do things better. From this, Psyche Mental Health Centre was born and officially opened on November 13th 2020. Since then, Psyche Mental Health Centre has grown and expanded services delivered to both our Hobart and Sorell communities.

What's in a name?
Pronounced Psych-ee (not Psych, it’s a Wingardium LeviOsa not LevioSA kinda situation) the name holds significant meaning for our Director, drawing on both a love of ancient mythology and psychology. Allison has been an ancient Greek mythology tragic from quite a young age and, as such, the name pays homage to Princess Psyche, mortal woman and wife of Eros, who was elevated to immortal status and made Goddess of the Soul having been subjected to a number of labours seemingly unachievable to a mortal. In cognitive psychology, the psyche is the totality of the human mind, conscious and unconscious. As such, for our centre, Psyche represents the meeting of both the mind and the soul.
