May 17th marks a very important day – the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia, commonly known as IDAHOBIT. This day serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for LGBTQIA+ rights and highlights the need for greater acceptance, understanding, and inclusivity in our communities. At our Psyche Mental Health Centre, we recognize the significance of IDAHOBIT and stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Understanding IDAHOBIT

IDAHOBIT originated in 2004 to commemorate the World Health Organization's decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.   Since then, IDAHOBIT has evolved into a day of advocacy, education, and celebration of LGBTQIA+ identities. The acronym encompasses various forms of discrimination faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, including homophobia (prejudice against homosexual people), biphobia (prejudice against bisexual people), interphobia (prejudice against intersex people), and transphobia (prejudice against transgender people).

The psychology field was witness to discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community, and now has an important role to play in the continued fight for equality and rights. As such, it is an important moment, particularly for those working in the mental health sector, to pause and reflect on the negative impact that the health field has had on the LGBTQIA+ community and a chance to consider how we can support the community moving forward.

As allied health professionals, we recognize the detrimental impact of discrimination on the psychological well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals. Studies have shown that experiences of rejection, bullying, and marginalization can contribute to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among LGBTQ+ youth. By challenging discrimination and promoting inclusivity, we can create safer and more supportive environments for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Taking Action: How You Can Support IDAHOBIT

Here are some ways you can be an ally during Pride Month and beyond:

1️. Educate Yourself: Take the time to learn about LGBTQIA+ history, terminology, and the challenges faced by the community. Understanding the experiences and struggles can help you become more informed and empathetic.

2️. Listen and Learn: Create a space for LGBTQIA+ individuals to share their stories and experiences. Listen with an open mind and without judgment.

3️. Use Inclusive Language: Be mindful of the language you use. Use gender-neutral pronouns when appropriate and respect individuals' names and identities. Avoid assumptions

4️. Support LGBTQIA+ Businesses and Organisations: Seek out and support local LGBTQIA+ owned businesses, charities, and organisations. Attend events, fundraisers, and workshops that promote inclusivity and equality (see our previous post regarding resources!)

5️. Speak Up Against Discrimination: Challenge homophobic, transphobic, and discriminatory language or behaviour when you encounter it. Your voice can make a difference and help create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

6️. Amplify LGBTQIA+ Voices: Share and amplify the voices and achievements of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Use your platform to promote their stories, art, activism, and contributions. Celebrate their successes and milestones.

7. Reflect and Self-Educate: Continuously reflect on your own biases and privileges. Challenge yourself to be more inclusive and understanding. Engage in ongoing self- education to expand your knowledge and understanding.

Celebrating Diversity and Resilience

Despite the challenges they may face, LGBTQ+ individuals demonstrate remarkable resilience, courage, and strength. IDAHOBIT is a time to celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and honour the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals to society. It's a day to uplift LGBTQ+ voices, share stories of triumph and resilience, and reaffirm our commitment to equality and justice for all.
